Ethiopia reaches new world record of planting 350 million trees in a day. Can Australia do more?

Updated: Sep 3, 2019

Why can't we achieve more in Australia? We have access to more financial resources and a great need to reforestate our country and regenerate our soils. 250 years of white colonisation and settlement of our country has damaged our environment destroying more the 50% of our forests degraded our country, soils and water systems. It's time to reverse the process. This should be both a national and states' priority.

At the Gulele Botanical Garden in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia launched a tree planting campaign to counter the effects of deforestation and climate change.

Ethiopia's Minister of Innovation and Technology Getahun Mekuria stated that more than 350 million trees were planted in 12 hours, breaking the world record held by India since 2016, for the most trees planted in one day and which stood at 50 million trees.

The tree planting event was attended by a representative of the UN Environment Programme’s Liaison Office to Africa Union Commission, UN Economic Commission for Africa and representative to Ethiopia, and whose support for this ambitious action was crucial, as well as other United Nations Agencies and various international organizations.
